Sony Headphones Review - The Best Noise Cancelling Headphones

The fifth-generation version of Sony's noise-cancelling headphones look a little different than the previous version but they're just as good. They're lightweight, comfortable and boast a range of features like Quick Attention mode, Speak-to-Chat wear detection, and AI-powered DSEE Extreme audio upscaling.

The ANC is powerful, cutting train noise into an ambient rumble. The pass-through option lets you to hear external sounds, if necessary.

1. Sony WH-1000XM5

Sony headphones are among the best when it comes noise cancellation. And the fifth generation of WH-1000XM5s is the same, providing one of the best experiences we've had with noise cancelling headphones in recent memory. When you put on a pair and enabling noise cancellation is like stepping into a veritable cone of silence: engine sounds, the whir of HVAC systems, creaking metal, even neighboring conversations are all muted to an uncanny degree.

The XM5s also stand out in the realm of audio with an impressive soundstage that gives the various elements of a track the space to breathe and shine. On Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy for example, the drums are pounding with a pleasing amount of power and weight, while soaring vocals harmonise throughout the mix.

Other features that make the XM5s standout are their intelligent interactions with your smart device. They can recognise when they're being removed from your head and stop music, they can note that you're traveling on a busy road and automatically dial down the noise cancelling levels and they can also connect to two devices simultaneously and switch between them based on what you require more urgently.

The WH-1000XM5s are green. They are made from recycled plastic and acrylonitrile styrene (ABS), with a headband made of high-end fabric. And they include a collapsible carrying case that folds to form a small bag, as well as an 3.5mm-to-3.5mm aux cable for listening in a quiet mode. The ear cups can be removed for simple cleaning. The XM5s are powered by a rechargeable battery that provides up to 20 hours of playtime on a full charge. Additionally, over ear headphones with noise cancelling equipped with an adaptive speed charging system that charges twice the speed of conventional USB headphones.

2. Bose QuietComfort 35

The Bose QuietComfort 35 I/QC35 II Wireless 2018 with their comfortable fit with a balanced sound profile and ANC technology that blocks out a significant amount of background noise, are more versatile than the Audio-Technica ATHDR9BT Wireless Headphones. The Bose headphones also come with longer battery life, lasting for 20 hours and take less time to charge, and can be used connected to a smartphone even when the battery is not fully charged and makes them a good choice for those who need a pair of headphones that can serve as commuting headphones or travel headphones.

These premium Bose headphones feature a dedicated Google Assistant button, which allows the assistant to play music, answer questions and read notifications on your smartphone. These headphones have excellent noise cancelling capabilities. They're old-fashioned in comparison to the standards of 2020, but you can still find great bargains.

The QC35s, as with other Bose ANC headsets, do well at blocking ambient noise. Their noise reduction technology has also improved over the years. However, they're not the best ANC headphones out there particularly when compared to newer competitors and audiophiles should look elsewhere for a better sound experience.

As with the Sonys the QC35s also connect to two devices at once and "audio share" one of them with a friend, which is useful when you're looking to listen music with one ear while talking to another. They are also popular among frequent flyers and feature that classic Bose design that people love. If you're looking to spruce up your QC35s by adding a little personalization, decal cover-ups like SlickWraps and Skin Sticker are available for affordable prices.

3. Sony WH-1000XM4

Sony's WH-1000XM4s don't offer much in the way of design or comfort improvements in comparison to the M3s, but its noise cancellation is an entirely new beast. Sony has replaced the older system-on-chip (SoC) with a new one that it claims will enable it to listen and respond more precisely the ambient sound in real time while reducing mid- and high-frequency noises with its Dual Noise sensor technology.

Two feedforward microphones in each earcup suck up ambient sounds, which are then processed by the QN1 noise-cancelling processor to cut it down as quickly as possible, without affecting the quality of your music. The result is an incredibly amazing level of noise reduction that easily competes with the best headphones in this price range.

There's also a sensitivity knob which lets you alter the level of noise cancellation according to your preferences. If you're in a public space for instance, you might want to allow a bit of ambient sound to filter through and at home, you'll want a more secluded listening experience. This feature also makes use of geo-location to automatically select the appropriate setting based on where you're heading.

The WH1000XM4s have the capability of making calls using hands-free technology. They also have a 30 hour battery life and rapid charging capabilities. They also boast a robust Bluetooth 5.0 connection with support for multipoint and NFC. In my tests, I found that an instant remastering of Paul McCartney’s Flaming pie sounded lively and clear, while rough mixes and recordings from the home also sound clear.

Download the Sony Headphones Connect companion app to get the most from these headphones. This lets you customize the EQ settings and offers convenience features like Bluetooth multipoint, while allowing you to unlock some of the latest cool things - like access to Sony's 360 Reality Audio immersive surround-sound mastering process that breathes life into the older music.

4. Sony WH-CH720N

The Sony WH-CH720N headphones are a ideal choice for those looking to buy headphones that provide excellent active noise cancellation at affordable costs. They are a step up from their predecessor model, the 710N Wireless, with a better ANC performance and better sound quality. The 710N Wireless is also equipped with a lighter design with a battery lifespan of up to 35 hours.

However, if you're expecting flagship-level features like LDAC Bluetooth support and Smart Listening with voice assistant integration These headphones aren't the best choice suitable for you. Also, they don't come with a carrying case or auto-pause functionality and the earcups can't fold and can make them difficult to carry around.

The build quality of the WH-CH720N is decent but not as good as the aforementioned 1000XM5. The headband and earcups are constructed of plastic. They're light and comfortable for long periods, but they're not built to withstand intense use or a few drops on hard surfaces. The design is heavy and the earcups rattle when you move. The controls are simple to use with tactile buttons which provide a good clicky feedback. The ANC can be switched off and on by a single push of the power switch. Pressing and holding the button will activate Sony's Adaptive audio Control. This feature lets you choose the appropriate profile based on the location you are in or how you use the headphones.

The WH-CH720N wireless noise cancellation headphones are one of the cheapest on the market. For the money you get top ANC with a great sound, lightweight comfort and up to 35 hours of battery life. If you're a frequent commuter these headphones are worth considering.

5. Earfun Air Pro

Earfun's earbuds and headsets are well-known for offering great value, and the Air Pro is no exception. They're efficient in calling and thrilling for music, while their ANC block a lot of noise without making you feel as if your ears are drowned. They also come with many features that are available on other headphones that cost more or twice as much.

The earbuds are over-emphasized in the bass section and creates a rumble in most tracks. Lead vocals and instruments remain clear and bright. This makes them suitable for a variety of music. However, they may seem a bit loud to some. Their frequency response is very consistent, ensuring they sound the identical no matter what you're listening to.

We played Missy Elliott's Get Ur Freak On and the earbuds were enthralled by the song's bassy intro with zeal and energy. Stormzy's Vossi Bop had a similar dynamic sound and the treble was a highlight of the vocals and percussion.

On the phone, the voice quality is very good even in noisy environments. The earbuds are equipped with the latest Qualcomm chip which ensures background noises, clicks, and other distractions are kept at low levels. This is the case even when talking next to London Underground during rush hour.

The earbuds' Bluetooth connectivity is also very good and there were no issues during our testing. They connect and pair quickly and with minimal latency on iOS and Android devices. They are IPX5 waterproof, meaning you can use them in rain or workouts. However they shouldn't be submerged in water. They also come with a movable case that holds two and a half batteries which is ideal for travelling.
